Studying Abroad

Before boarding the plan to the United States, Zahra was accompanied her parents and grandmother to the airport in Riyadh. It was difficult for her to say goodbye as she was very attached her family. However, she wanted to get a good education that would a positive impact her future back in Saudi Arabia. The first six months abroad were very difficult for Zahra and her emails back home consisted complaints about her new environment and homesickness. Because she was the only Arab girl at her small school, she felt lonely and isolated the other students. With time, however, Zahra started to feel more comfortable in her new environment and make friends. Within a year Zahra’s’ emails were full of joy and stories of new friendships. It simply took her time to learn how to adapt, rely people from different cultures, and communicate effectively in another language.
