To the Vocabulary Teacher
Vocabulary teachers know that teaching students to understand words means teaching them the multiple layers of a word. Students need to not only know word meanings, but also understand the appropriate register, collocations, and corresponding grammar. There is a lot to know!
Below I have posted two resources that deal with word families. The first part "Word Family Parts" provides teachers with a table of the most frequent suffixes and prefixes. Below this document you will find a file labled "word family list." This 18-page document lists the word families for all of Coxhead's (2000) 570 word academic word list. I hope you will find them to be useful teacher resources for your EAP courses.
